Electric vehicles are among the most flexible loads in the grid. Unlike showering, cooking and heating our homes, we can shift the demand to other times, such as overnight, when there is more capacity in the network. The trade-off, of course, is that it takes longer until the vehicle is fully charged.

The larger either C9 or L6 become, the higher will be the noise attenuation. A stepped-up turns ratio can be used in the steering transformer for added attenuation and C9 sizing.

Reminds me of the time I had to measure a ~30kV supply – although not to any great precision. From memory we used a voltage divider of around 2000:1, using 2 large 500Mohm (?) wire-wound resistors for the high side. The op-amp was in a metal tin (an oddity to me, used to DIP packages at the time) with a very low leakage current.

While the power Darlington is easy to drive, it has a few drawbacks. First is the voltage drop through the device when it’s conducting. Drop one or two volts on the transistor and you’ve pretty quickly got a few watts of power going to waste and a hot chip. And that’s assuming that you’ve got the voltage drop to spare — a volt or two off of the 3.6 V on a LiPo battery pack is a serious loss.
