Abstract: Methods and systems for Ethernet fabric protection in a disaggregated OTN switching system that include PIU modules each having multiple ports for OTN to Ethernet transceiving and an Ethernet fabric as a switching core are disclosed. An OTN over Ethernet module in each of the PIU modules may enable various OTN functionality to be realized using the Ethernet fabric which may include multiple Ethernet switches. A first PIU module may detect a fault condition on an Ethernet fabric plane of the Ethernet fabric. In response to the detection, the OTN switching system may transmit the fault condition to other PIU modules to redirect optical data unit traffic away from the fault on the Ethernet fabric plane.

L8 (Fig. 2) is the normal PFC inductor and a small SDM transformer, T1, is inserted between L8 and the input filter. T1’s  primary inductance is in the order of a few µH and L8 is >100µH so there is low voltage across T1 primary and its E*T (0.90 is adequate). C9 will circulate all the high-frequency switching noise to ground and will have the half wave rectified ac voltage across it. A low ESR polypropylene cap should be used. T1 secondary is a low impedance to the switching frequency, steering switching currents into it to ground. The low-frequency currents that flow through the primary must see an inductance, L6 to block high frequencies.

Years ago, the obvious answer to this dilemma would be TIP120 or similar bipolar junction transistor (BJT) — and a lot more batteries. The beauty of old-school Darlington transistors in low-voltage circuits is that the microcontroller only needs to produce a small current to push relatively large currents on the business end. With BJTs, as long as you can get over the base-emitter junction voltage (typically under one or two volts) you just pick the right base resistor and you’re set. This is in contrast to FETs of the day which require a given voltage to pass a current through them. Gate voltages for the big FETs are optimized for the 4-5 V range which is lousy if you all you have is a LiPo battery.
